When to Call in the Professionals, part 2

In our last installment, we examined several major plumbing problems that absolutely should not be handled in a DIY fashion. These are the jobs for the experts (like 1st Home and Commercial Services). The list, continued…

Clogged Drains

Yes, ‘simple’ clogs can be cleared with a drain snake. However, not all clogs are created equal. Clogs that happen more than 25 feet down the drain line need something more than a traditional drain snake. Some plumbers even have hydrojets that use high-powered streams of water to clean your drain lines.

Garbage Disposal Repairs

Garbage disposals have a tendency to create huge messes when they fail, either because they back up into the kitchen sink or because they burn out a motor and leave a burnt electric smell in the kitchen. Minor problems with a garbage disposal can quickly turn into major problems if they are not handled by a professional.

Something as simple as a blade that fails to rotate can cause the motor to work too hard and burn out. The real danger, though, comes when an amateur tries to repair it and opens the unit. Once a garbage disposal is taken apart, it is almost impossible to put back together again.

Rusted Piping

Galvanized steel pipes were the standard until the late 1950s when copper pipes became the norm for residential housing. Older, galvanized pipes start to rust from the inside out after about 50 years of use. The rust that comes out in the tap water contains high levels of lead and should not be consumed or used for cooking. A home with galvanized steel pipes needs to have the entire system replaced to prevent the danger of lead poisoning. Only a licensed plumber is qualified to handle a job of this magnitude.

Any of the above problems could affect your home. The good news is licensed plumbers can handle all of these problems without too much trouble. When in doubt, Don’t take repairs into your own hands unless you are sure of the underlying cause of the problem and have the right tools and knowledge to handle the job.
