When Austin Heaters Need Help

When Austin Heaters Need Help

It never fails. Just when we think Spring is here, we get another late season cold snap. After a couple of weeks in the 70s and 80s, today we have a chance of slow flurries in Central Texas. Crazy Texas weather makes us really appreciate our home heaters and AC units working properly – sometimes with just a day’s notice.

Homeowners who experience problems with their heating units should ideally hire a professional for repairs. There are many parts that make up a heating unit, and many of those parts require special experience and tools to repair or replace them. Homeowners can do much to help point an HVAC professional in the right direction, though. By knowing what to look for – the telltale signs of a problem – they may be able to catch a small, inexpensive problem before it escalates to a full blown disaster.

A heating unit that turns on and then shuts off continuously should be serviced.

This is known as ‘short cycling’ and it often means that there is something wrong with the heating unit’s control board. The fan motor of the heating unit will cycle on and off while it tries to heat the home. If left undiagnosed this problem could overload the furnace’s blower motor since the blower motor is frequently being put on and off of a power load. It also will increase the homeowner’s electric bill since the fan motor will be on more than normal.

A heating unit that is not heating at all should be looked at immediately.

A lack of heat is an obvious sign that there is something very wrong with your heating unit. It could be something as small as a faulty thermostat, or it could be something as major as a heat exchanger. For those who have gas heaters, catching a heat deficiency early, a homeowner may even prevent possible destruction of their property via an explosion from a gas leak.

Many of these problems could be avoided if a homeowner were to have an annual HVAC tune up performed by a licensed Austin-area AC technician. This type of routine maintenance extends the life of a heating unit so that homeowners can enjoy the most efficient method of heating – when they most need it.
