Tips to Keep Your HVAC Running Strong This Summer

With Austin’s summer heat in full swing, your HVAC system is working overtime to keep your home comfortable. At 1st Home & Commercial, we know a little prevention goes a long way in keeping your system efficient, your energy bills lower, and your home cool all summer long. Here are our top tips to help your HVAC run strong through the Texas heat:

1. Don’t Turn Off Your HVAC — Just Bump the Temp

It may seem energy-efficient to turn off your system completely while you’re out of the house, but this can actually strain your HVAC. Instead, raise your thermostat 5–8 degrees higher when you’re away. Your system won’t have to work as hard to get back to your desired temperature, helping it last longer. For more details, read this blog post.

2. Use a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats, like the Honeywell model we offer, can automatically adjust your home’s temperature throughout the day. This helps save energy and eases the load on your system, especially during peak hours. Bonus: Many models let you track your usage and get alerts when your system might need attention. Check out our latest blog post for the Top 3 Smart Thermostats in 2025.

3. Close Window Shades During the Day

Blocking out the intense afternoon sun can help reduce the amount of heat your home absorbs, keeping your home cooler naturally. This takes some of the pressure off your HVAC system and helps maintain a more consistent indoor temperature.

4. Use Ceiling or Oscillating Fans

Fans don’t cool the air, but they help circulate it, making you feel cooler and allowing you to raise the thermostat a few degrees. Look for ENERGY STAR® certified ceiling fans, which are more efficient and effective at keeping you comfortable.

5. Plant Trees or Bushes Strategically

Landscaping can actually impact your indoor comfort. Trees or tall shrubs on the west and south sides of your home can block harsh afternoon sunlight, helping to naturally reduce indoor temperatures. Plus, it adds curb appeal!

6. Clean Your Condenser Coil

Your outdoor unit (the condenser) needs clean airflow to function properly. A buildup of dirt, pollen, or debris can choke the system. Light buildup can often be rinsed with a hose, but if it’s been a long time, it may need a professional chemical cleaning. If you’re not sure what your system needs, give us a call.

7. Become a Peace of Mind Member for VIP Priority

Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, your system may still need a repair, and when it’s 100º outside, you don’t want to wait. Our Peace of Mind Maintenance Plan Members get first-priority service in emergencies, plus regular inspections that can catch issues before they become a problem.
